Card 1

  1. I'm TERRIBLY sorry - I didn't realize it was your seat.
  2. The small child ran across the road to get the ball. LUCKILY there were no cars coming.
  3. You must phone the office AT ONCE. It's urgent.
  4. I love reading in bed, ESPECIALLY on Sunday mornings.
  5. Maria's SLIGHTLY taller than me - about a centimetre.

Card 2

  1. If you work HARD I think you can pass the exam first time.
  2. I couldn't take another step! I was ABSOLUTELY exhausted.
  3. Don't try to learn everything at once. You have to do it GRADUALLY.
  4. I don't ALWAYS have time for breakfast in the mornings.
  5. The vet picked up the injured dog CAREFULLY and put it on the table.

Card 3

  1. Cars used to be a luxury but NOWADAYS most families have one.
  2. The weather forecast says it's going to be cold tomorrow, and very windy AS WELL.
  3. We NEARLY missed the train. It left the station 30 seconds after we got on.
  4. 'Coffee?' 'No thanks. I've JUST had one'.
  5. She has been feeling very stressed LATELY.

Card 4

  1. I don't drink MUCH. Just a glass of wine at weekends.
  2. I'm so tired I can HARDLY keep my eyes open.
  3. We don't OFTEN go to the cinema, only about once evey three months.
  4. It was a terrible accident but luckily nobody was SERIOUSLY injured.
  5. I'd love to come but UNFORTUNATELY I've got to work all weekend.

Card 5

  1. Drive very CAREFULLY because it's a very dangerous road.
  2. I won't give you all the details now but BASICALLY the plan is very simple.
  3. Ther was a lot of traffic so we arrived LATE for the meeting.
  4. The house was completely destroyed by the explosion but LUCKILY nobody was at home.
  5. I don't know what to do about the job offer but I think I'll FINALLY accept it.

Card 6

  1. My husband's been acting strangely LATELY.
  2. He'd grown a beard and was much fatter so I HARDLY recognized him when he walked in.
  3. It looked expensive but in fact it was VERY cheap.
  4. He's so generous. He ALWAYS buys all his employees a Christmas present.
  5. After looking for the car keys all morning I EVENTUALLY found them under the sofa.

Card 7

  1. In the brochure the hotel looked wonderful but when we got there it was ABSOLUTELY awful.
  2. We HARDLY see each other - we're both so busy.
  3. NEARLY everyone has a mobile phone nowadays.
  4. Oh no! I've left my wallet at home, and my keys AS WELL.
  5. At first we couldn't hear the music but GRADUALLY it got louder and louder.

Card 8

  1. She speaks several languages FLUENTLY.
  2. The view from the top of the mountain was fantastic. But UNFORTUNATELY I'd forgotten to bring my camera.
  3. Don't take things so SERIOUSLY. Try to relax more!
  4. We got really lost but EVENTUALLY we managed to find their house.
  5. He looks unfriendly but ACTUALLY he's very nice.
  • Writing - Make your language more vivid by using more adjectives and adverbs...
